ADA Trail Access at Head’s Pond Moves Forward

HOOKSETT — At its June 9 meeting, the Hooksett Conservation Commission shared updates on the proposed “Access for All” project at Head’s Pond Trail, aimed at improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Commission member Al reported he met with Bruce, the Town Engineer, to discuss what would be required to bring the access trail up to ADA standards. The trail grade must not exceed 8%, with a level platform required every 50 feet. Based on their site analysis, approximately 200 feet of the trail would need to be regraded to meet compliance.

The local Kiwanis Club has stepped up with a generous offer, pledging up to $20,000 toward construction costs, along with an additional $2,000 earmarked for engineering expenses. The Commission discussed whether to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for design, engineering, and survey work.

There was also discussion about the necessity of ADA compliance, considering the full trail is not currently ADA-accessible. However, the Town Engineer advised that if funds are being invested, it would be prudent to ensure full ADA compliance for the access section.

A motion by Commissioner S. Gilbert to accept the $2,000 in engineering funding from Kiwanis was seconded by J. Pieroni and passed unanimously.
