Hooksett Public Library is back after last year’s flood

Posted

HOOKSETT – On Aug. 3, 2024, the Hooksett Library experienced unexpected and significant flooding during a roof replacement project that affected the first floor and parts of the lower level. This unforeseen event challenged us to respond quickly and decisively to restore our much used services and community space.

In the months since, library staff and partners have been working tirelessly to expedite renovations, despite the expected and unexpected hurdles related to contractor availability and insurance funding approvals.

Swift response to ensure continued services

Immediately following the flooding incident, the library prioritized remediation efforts to mitigate further damage. In addition removing flood-damaged furniture, carpeting, ceiling tiles, and equipment, it was necessary to enlist the professional services of specialists for asbestos abatement in a couple of flood-affected spaces.

By Aug. 12, we were able to move almost half of the library’s collections to the Village Depot Room downstairs, making them available to patrons for browsing and borrowing. We also had to move our staff to the Hebert Room downstairs. Our smart lockers remained accessible throughout the renovation process, ensuring 24/7 access to library materials.

Renovation milestones and improvements

We are pleased to share that the new flooring – a combination of durable carpeting and LVT flooring – as well as painting projects have been completed, significantly revitalizing our library spaces.

These improvements have not only restored the affected areas but have also enhanced the overall ambiance, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for our patrons and staff.

Enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency

Taking advantage of the closure during renovations, we upgraded to energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the library. This investment has already yielded a noticeable reduction in electricity usage, aligning with our commitment to environmental sustainability and cost savings.

Teamwork and community support

Reshelving our collections back upstairs onto the reconfigured shelving units has truly been an all-hands-on-deck effort. Library staff have worked diligently alongside and practically on the heels of contractors to ensure that full browsing and borrowing services were restored upstairs.

Patrons will experience a whole new browsing experience when they see the redesigned spaces with a bookstore-like vibe.

We understand that the recovery process has taken time, and we deeply appreciate your patience and support. Our goal has always been to create a space that better serves our community, and we are excited to welcome you back to an improved and revitalized library.

Looking ahead

We are also delighted to announce that in-person children’s programs will resume during the first week of March. We are working hard to reinstate in-person programs for adults in the coming weeks.

Together, we are building a stronger community space for the Hooksett community.
