Hooksett Budget Committee

My wife, Martha and I have lived in Hooksett for 44 years. We raised two children here, Philip and Andrea.

I coached various teams in HYAA and served as Cub Scout Master.

I recently retired as a senior vice president of a large energy engineering, construction and infrastructure company where I had primary responsibility for managing extremely large budgets and multiple employees.

Since my retirement, I’ve felt that I could use my expertise to help Hooksett run more efficiently and effectively. This effort began when I volunteered my time on the school board facility committee after the second failed school budget vote in March 2025.

While I missed the failed initial 2024 vote, I was able to review the second proposal in 2025 and found it severely lacking. Like many town residents, I voted against it and decided to get involved in developing a lasting solution to the building problems that would save money for the taxpayers. It is imperative to maintain the buildings in a proper and professional way to provide the school children with an acceptable learning environment and at the same time, protect the taxpayers.

Waiting for the buildings to “fall apart” like the current process is not acceptable. The third time, we developed the construction proposal in a way that would focus on the specific issues that need to be addressed in the buildings.

Now we are developing a plan to properly perform maintenance that was never completed in the past so that the buildings will not fall back into disrepair. Ongoing maintenance is continuous. It is not a one-time project and it will take a dedicated commitment from the school staff to execute but, if followed, will ensure that the town reaps long-term benefits from the repairs should they be voted in.

From this experience on the facilities committee, I believe that there are many ways to control spending in our town that may not be apparent to the current members. I feel that being on the budget committee will allow me to share my ideas on how to reduce wasteful spending and maximize current funding.

I do not like paying excessive property taxes any more than any other resident. I also realize that the income from taxes is necessary to run the town. Town boards need to realize that funding must be managed and spent wisely to fully benefit the townspeople. They should account for how taxpayers’ money is spent.

In the business world where I come from, competition is everywhere. You always need to be looking for ways to perform your work faster and more efficiently. While running a town is not the same as running a business; there are similarities that can be utilized to help us become more cost-effective.

As stated earlier, my background is in business, focusing on energy engineering and construction. I have years of experience with budgets and if voted in I will do my best to ensure your tax dollars are spent wisely.
